Design of signal-adapted FIR paraunitary filter banks

چکیده
We study the design of signal–adapted FIR paraunitary filter banks, using energy compaction as the adaptation criterion. We present some important properties that globally optimal solutions to this optimization problem satisfy. In particular, we show that the optimal filters in the first channel of the filter bank are spectral factors of the solution to a linear semi–infinite programming (SIP) problem. The remaining filters are related to the first through a matrix eigenvector decomposition. We discuss uniqueness and sensitivity issues. The SIP problem is solved using a discretization method and a standard simplex agorithm. We also show how regularity constraints may be incorporated into the design problem so as to obtain globally optimal (in the energy compaction sense) filter banks with specified regularity. We also consider a problem in which the polyphase matrix implementation of the filter bank is constrained to be DCT–based. Such constraints may also be incorporated into our optimization algorithm, so we are able to obtain globally optimal filter banks subject to regularity and/or computational complexity constraints. Numerous experiments are presented to illustrate the main features that distinguish adapted and nonadapted filters, as well as the effects of the various constraints. The conjecture that energy compaction and coding gain optimization are equivalent design criteria, is shown not to hold for FIR filter banks. ∗Work partly presented at ICASSP’95 and ICASSP’96. †Part of this work was performed while P. New technique for design of 2-channel fir paraunitary filter banks
In this paper we obtain a new parameterization of all FIR paraunitary two-channel filter banks. Unlike other approaches which make use of a lattice structure or a cascade algorithm, we show that our technique provides a direct explicit expression of all FIR orthogonal filters, with no need of iteration procedures. Thus, in order to design a L-tap 2-channel paraunitary filterbank, it suffices to...
متن کاملEnergy compaction performance of paraunitary FIR filter banks for finite-length signals
The energy compaction performance of two-channel paraunitary finite impulse response (FIR) filter banks for finitelength signals is investigated. A detailed non-iterative design procedure for boundary filters which are optimal in a weighted mean square error (MSE) sense in the Fourier domain is presented. Simulation results are given for twochannel paraunitary FIR filter banks based on minimump...
متن کاملNew Design of Orthogonal Filter Banks Using the Cayley Transform
It is a challenging task to design orthogonal filter banks, especially multidimensional (MD) ones. In the onedimensional (1D) two-channel finite impulse response (FIR) filter bank case, several design methods exist. Among them, designs based on spectral factorizations (by Smith and Barnwell) and designs based on lattice factorizations (by Vaidyanathan and Hoang) are the most effective and widel...
متن کاملBoundary filters without DC leakage for paraunitary filter banks
The construction of boundary filters without DC leakage for two-channel paraunitary FIR filter banks is considered. The design procedure is based on orthogonal boundary filters which are optimal in a weighted mean square error sense in the Fourier domain and on Householder transformation of boundary filter matrices. Simulation results are presented for boundary filters based on minimum-phase Da...
متن کاملDesign and factorization of FIR paraunitary filter banks given several analysis filters
This correspondence discusses the design and factorization of FIR paraunitary filter banks where several analysis filters are given. A lattice factorization-based algorithm is presented that provides complete and minimal characterization for nonlinear-phase and balanced linear-phase systems. As a result, the design problem can be formulated as an unconstrained optimization of the lattice coeffi...
